Our Sweet Goodness partner for July is STR8UP Saskatoon. They assist individuals in mastering their own destiny and liberating themselves from gangs, addictions, and criminal street lifestyles. 

We wanted to give them an opportunity to raise awareness about any of their different programs, and they asked to talk about their Transitional Housing, Little Steps.

Transitional Housing, Little Steps

Coming out of provincial and federal institutions can be overwhelming. Many things need to be accomplished to get set up in the community that cannot be done while still incarcerated. The reality for many is that they are left with nowhere to go and with only what they had when they went inside. Going back to what they know seems like the only option.

STR8 UP Transitional Housing provides fully furnished suites for individuals and Transitional Housing Workers to assist individuals with the transition back to community and independence.

STR8 UP Transitional Housing program provides a temporary sober housing solution for individuals who are being released into the community and/or otherwise able to live independently but need assistance in various areas while securing permanent housing.

STR8 UP is able to provide 11 transitional housing suites in our community. The housing suites provide a 30-90 day stay for individuals who are being released from provincial or federal institutions or who have current criminal justice involvement. During their stay, individuals will be supported in obtaining government issued ID’s, medical care, life skills, addressing addictions, education, employment, community support connections and permanent housing.

STR8 UP second-stage housing suites provide a 6 to 12 month stay for individuals who are currently living in transitional suites and need additional support before they are ready to live independently in the community.

This program is for people who:

• are motivated to change
• have a willingness to follow expectations of sobriety
• are 18 years and older
• are justice involved or already connected with STR8 UP
• are Saskatchewan residents
• are willing to case plan and connect with our support staff
• want to attend programming based on their needs

STR8 UP Transitional Housing Workers take the time to case plan with tenants one-on-one. Our case planning model is based on the Medicine Wheel. Each case plan looks different and reflects the needs of each individual. 

Basic necessities are always met first (ID, income, bank accounts and medical care). Referrals, advocacy and transports can be done for those wishing to address their addictions or mental health. Resume building for employment, assistance in filling out applications for education and housing is also done. Life skills such as cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping and budgeting can also be part of their case plan.
